Email: Spam its meant to be eaten not mailed!

It happens to all of us, we get an email here or there from a friend then all of a sudden a rush of emails more powerful than Niagara falls fills your E-mail box. Of course, you know many of the emails you have obtained are not from anyone you know. You probably never inquired about a male enhancement prescription or how to loose weight for free! Spam or Junk email is a very common problem. There are many ways you receive junk mail and there are a few ways to prevent it from coming in.

Where did this spam come from?

  1. We are all guilty–Every website that you register for asks you for your email address. Many of these websites also send “special offers or promotions” sometimes offers come from “third-party” which in limens terms means “JUNK MAIL”
  2. Some spam systems will scan the internet for random email address to acquire an abundant list for mass emailing. Alternatively some bots just create random email addresses hoping to email a few that are real for free exposure.
  3. The third way that companies obtain email addresses is by using software that will generate slightly altered sequential email addresses such as “john1834@yahoo.com” and “john1835@yahoo.com” this method uses no outside source and is un-avoidable.

Power loss: how your computer is affected

Most of us know that a storm can cause power surges that will damage your computer. Which, is why we turn them off at the sign of a storm. But what you may not know is this; the power that comes into your house is not CLEAN power. Your power can actually surge at anytime not just when a storm is on the way. You should safeguard your computer by using a power-strip and ensuring that all of your computer components are plugged into the surge protector. Here are a few tips and suggestions to consider when purchasing power protection for your computer

What kind of surge protector should I get?

Its recommended that you get a surge protector that has some kind of insurance. They are usually not more expensive that a standard power surge protector and the benefit of having a company replace your equipment if the surge protector fails is definitely worth it.
Don’t just go for the cheapest surge protector. We all want to save money but the cheaper the surge protector is the less effective they are.
Check the Joules rating on the surge protector and choose one with a higher rating. The higher the Joules rating the more energy it can absorb during a surge . You should have a surge protector with a rating between 200-400 Joules but 600 or more is ideal.
Check to see how high the clamping voltage and how long the response time is. The surge protector should should have a clamping voltage no higher than 400V. You should also choose a surge protector that takes less than a nanosecond to respond to a surge.

Is there something even more effective than a surge protector?

Yes, you can receive even better protection with an uninterruptable power supply (UPS). This not only includes a surge protector but also has a battery that will keep your devices on for a short amount of time in the event of a power outage. This allows you to shut down your system properly and avoid data corruption.

SHORTCUT:  How to cut, copy, & paste!

One of the greatest things about a computer is the fact that using a computer is much more efficient than using pen and paper. But just how efficient are you being? If you don't know hot to copy and paste then you my friend, will love this!

So say you visited a website and you wanted to email a portion of the text to a friend or put it into a word document so that you wouldn't have to look the information up later. Writing or re-typing would take more time that its probably worth!

What does copying do?: Allows you to duplicate text so that you can paste another instance of the text elsewhere.

To copy text: Place your cursor at the beginning (or end) of the text that you wish to copy. While holding the left mouse button down drag your cursor to the end of the text you wish to copy. The text that will be copied will be highlighted on your screen. Once the text is highlighted you need to release the left mouse button and right click within the highlighted text. (Note: if you click outside of the highlighted text it will deselect the highlighted text) This will bring up your “edit menu”

To paste text: Open the document or email (etc.) that you want the text to appear in. Right click where you would like your text to be inserted. The “edit menu” will appear and you will need to left click on paste. (Note: some programs may ask you if you would like to “keep source formatting” or text only. This will only affect the size, color or font of the text)

To cut text: Cutting will allow you to remove text from one area and place it in another area without having to copy and delete the text. To cut text follow the steps for copying text but select cut instead of copy.
