No Internet Connectivity

    NO INTERNET CONNECTION? (High-Speed Only)

  1. First check to see that your modem (the DSL or CABLE box) has the DSL or Cable light lit. The Internet light should also be lit. If not unplug your modem (some boxes have a battery backup if the lights remain on feel around for a battery access panel and remove the battery momentarily). If you have a router also unplug your router from the wall. Plug your Modem box back in. If you have a router wait about 2 minutes and then plug your router back in. Try your connection again. If the lights on the modem are not lit please contact your Internet Service Provider, you may have a service interruption.

  2. Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and then Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab across the top of the screen. Click on the LAN button and verify that “detect settings automatically” is checked. Try your connection again after closing and re-opening Internet Explorer.

  3. In control panel go to Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista) and look for Internet Explorer 8 (you may have to check show updates at the top for it to be visible) If Internet Explorer 8 is listed you can try removing it to see if that fixes your problem. We have experienced many issues with Internet Explorer 8 including loss of connection.

  4. If you are trying to connect wirelessly ensure that you are connecting to the correct wireless network. Right click on the wireless icon in your taskbar and click on view available wireless networks. Make sure you connect to the network which names matches the wireless network you are trying to connect to. (Note: Some computers have a special utility for wireless configuration. The utility should be in your tray by the clock but may not have the same options to connect.)
  5. NO INTERNET CONNECTION? (Dial-Up Only)

  6. Verify that phone line you are using is working. Plug a phone directly into the cable that you plug your computer into and verify that you have a dial-tone. If you have no dial-tone try using a different cable or outlet.

  7. If  you get an error that says "invalid user name or password" you will need to contact your ISP (internet service provider for that information.)

  8. If you have more than one access number for your area try dialing to another number provided by your ISP

  9. If you are still having problems connecting your modem may have gone bad. Modems are very sensitive to static electricity and may be damaged due to thunderstorms.

No Sound

1. Ensure that your speakers have power (if required). The speakers should plug into the computer through a speaker cable and may also have a power plug or a usb cable that plugs into the computer. Without power your speakers will not play sound. Ensure that the speakers have power and are turned on.

2. Verify that your speakers are correctly connected. Find the speaker cable coming from your speakers (sometimes your monitor if you have built in speakers). The end of the cable should plug into a jack that is labeled green.

3. If you still have no sound verify that the volume is not muted by left clicking on the speaker icon by your clock. Uncheck the mute box if it is checked and slide your volume bar to a louder volume.

5. If you do not have sound you may need to check to make sure that the speakers physical volume dial is turned up.

6. If you still do not have sound you may be missing a driver or your sound card may not be working properly. We will be able to diagnose this issue in store.

Printer wont print

1. Verify that your printer is plugged into both the wall and to the computer (networked printers will not be connected but will have an ethernet cable going to your router). Also ensure that the printer is turned on. Check for any lights that indicate a paper jam, low ink or, no paper.

2. Now ensure that your printer is installed. Access your control panel.

XP users: Click on start. On the right side of your menu click on control panel. Click on printers. If printers is not visible you may have to click on "switch to classic view" located on the left of the window.

Vista/Windows 7 users: Click start and type printers. You will see printers populate in the list above. Click on printers. (If you are using classic view follow the steps above for xp users)

View the printers and verify that your printer is listed. If the printer is not listed it is not properly installed. Insert your disk to reinstall the printer or visit the manufacturers website to download the drivers. If you do need to reinstall your printer you should disconnect it from the compute prior to running the installation.

3. If your printer is installed right click on the printer and make sure that "online" is checked. If your printer is offline it will not print.

4. If your printer is listed but is still not functioning correctly you will need to uninstall your printer and reinstall it.

XP users: Click on start. Click on control panel to the right of the menu. Click on add or remove programs (You may need to click on "classic view" at the left of the window)

Vista/Windows 7 users: Click start and type programs and features. You will see Programs and features populate in the list above.

Find your printer in the list and click uninstall. It may take a few minutes for the list to fully load.

5. If your printer is still not working correctly you can try using another usb cable (or ethernet if printer is connected through the network)

If you are trying to print to a printer on the network your network may not be setup correctly. Please see on-site network installation here.

If you are still having trouble with your printer it may be in the main board. Most printers are not cost effective to fix and we do not repair printers.

*Note: We have had many issues with wireless printers. If you have a wireless printer that is not connecting it will take much more troubleshooting to resolve the issue.

CD/DVD problems

Disks will not read

1. If the disk is not loading automatically your autoplay could be corrupt. Try going to my computer and verifying that the cd drive is visible. If it is you can access your disk by clicking on the icon.

2. If the CD drive is not visible your CD drive may not be getting power or could be faulty.

3. If you installed any recent software or have itunes or norton installed on your computer your software may be conflicting. If the problem arose after installing software uninstall the software to see if the drive is visible. If the issue is due to software we are able to change your registry without uninstalling the program. This should be done by professionals only and will need to be done in store.

Disk drawer will not open

1. Your drive may have lost power. The internal power connector may have came loose or your power supply may not be supplying enough power to run your CD drive.

2. The gears inside the drive may be faulty. You can manually eject your disk drive by finding a small pinhole located on the front of the drive and using a paperclip to push inside and force the drive open. This will not hurt your drive. Drive that have bad gears cannot be repaired they must be replaced.

Disks will read but will not burn

1. If your disk drive is reading but is not writing verify that the software you use to burn your disks is working correctly. You may need to reinstall your burning software.

2. Its very rare that failure to write a disk is anything other than hardware failure. On occasion the cause could be lack of power or the neccesity for a replacement data cable.

Keyboard/Mouse Problems

1. Verify that the cables are connected. Unplug and reconnect your mouse or keyboard.

  • If you are using a USB keyboard or mouse (rectangular connector) try using a different USB port. If you are using a PS2 connector (round connector)
  • You will need to shut the computer down before disconnecting and reconnecting the cable.

2. If you have a ball mouse and are experiencing a jumpy cursor, try removing the ball from the bottom and cleaning any dirt or dust that has collected.

3. If you are using a wireless mouse and/or keyboard try changing the batteries. Some mice and keyboards require you to reconnect the device after changing batteries. Review your owners manual to find out how to reconnect your device.
